Has anything changed for registering new users using a gmail address?

We got feedback from users who try to sign up for an account.

It does not accept gmail or icloud addresses.
That worked pretty well in the past.

Please explain.
Thank you.

Hi @rakekniven

This is Carlos from the Transifex support team.

Transifex has made improvement to it’s login and security so now, in order to have a new account a corporate mail is needed, however you can invite collaborators and assign them any role in Transifex.

To invite someone:

  • Click the Teams tab in the main navigation.

  • In the header, click Invite Collaborators.

  • Add that person’s Transifex username or email address in the popup window and assign them a role in your organization. Anyone who doesn’t have a Transifex account yet will receive an email with a signup link. Depending on the role you’d like to assign that person, you may be asked to specify which project, team, or language they’ll be added to.

  • Once you’ve filled in all the details, click Send Invitation.

  • To invite additional collaborators, click Invite More. Repeat Step 3 above and click the + icon to add them to the list of invitees. Click Send Invitation to invite all the users on your list.

When you add the email address you can add a gmail account and they will be able to access to the project without any issues.

Hello @colvera ,

thank you for your really quick response.

I understand your steps to invite another person, should be doable

What is the improvement here? People are not able to sign up.
Security? Do you have spam account issues? Aren’t there other options than blocking domains from e-mail addresses?

I would very much appreciate an explanation.

Cheers

Hi @rakekniven

It’s a best practice to only service corporative email account. This way we ensure that sensitive information like billing contact, invoices are sent to accounts that belong to a business, so for example, if someone leaves a company this makes us be sure that we are not sending the information to someone outside the organization.

Hope this information helps
Best regards,
Carlos Olvera

Hello @colvera

I can understand that you want to make sure that you only send sensitive information to the right people and there are also improvements thanks to functions like MFA.

Does this mean that Transifex wants to focus on business customers?

How can open source projects bring new collaborators into the teams if you leave out big mail providers like gmail or icloud?

Will there be changes for OSS projects?

Cheers,
Mark

We will still support OSS projects, as described before we are not fully restricting the access to Transifex, gmail accounts can still be invited as collaborators and as long as the account gathers all the requirements OSS can still apply for an open source license.

If you need further details I encourage you to send your doubts and concerns through support@transifex.com so someone more specialized can share this information with you.

Best regards,
Carlos Olvera

Nextcloud is a larger open source project and almost all the work is based on volunteers.

The volunteers are not the project owners, so there is no risk of sensitive information being leaked to people with a gmail address, for example. That’s why I can’t understand the argument.
One possibility is that you check the e-mail when assigning roles such as Organization or Project lead.

If volunteers cannot simply register, many translators will be left out. This barrier doesn’t have to be there.

That’s why I’m asking for a good argument for this step.

Just for completeness: We are also a paying customer and would like an explanation here.

The existence of this forum is a result of the exchange of @glezos and other employees of Transifex with projects like Nextcloud (and me) since 2016. Transifex has gained in quality through the many inputs, so I would like to discuss these topics openly and transparently.

Please remove this barrier to volunteering again!

Hi @rakekniven,

If it helps I can contact your CSM so they can provide you the information more in detail.

About the restriciton for admiting only corporate mails I can raise a product request to be considerate in the future.

Best regards,
Carlos Olvera
