Did you know how to migrate from one project type to another?

Hey there, Transifex Community! :star2: It’s Sandy from the Customer Success Team. When starting your localization journey with Transifex, one of the first big decisions is choosing the right project type: Live, file-based, or Native. Each has its own perks to fit your needs.

But what if your plans change and you need to switch project types? For example, moving from a Live project to a Native or file-based approach. The big question then is: “Will I lose all my translations?”

Don’t worry! This post will show you how to migrate your project type in Transifex without losing any translated content. Read on to learn how to make the switch smoothly. :rocket:

How It Works:

  1. Upload Your Content to your new project
  • Begin by uploading your content to the new project, whether file-based, live, or native.
  • Add the target languages for the new project.
  1. Assign the Glossary of the old project to the new one
  • Assign the glossary from your old project to the new one to ensure consistency in terminology.
  1. Leverage Translation Memory ™
  • Utilize the old project’s translation memory in the new project. You have two options:
    • Upload the Old TMX File: Export the TMX file from your old project and upload it to the new project.
    • Create a TM Group: Include both the old and new projects in a TM group, allowing them to share the same translation memory.
  1. Enable TM Fillup
  • Enable the TM fillup feature in the new project. Given that segmentation differences might cause some strings to vary slightly, enabling fuzzy matches and reducing the match threshold to 95% or higher can help you retrieve a significant percentage of previously translated strings.
  1. Retranslate Remaining Strings
  • Manually retranslate any strings that the TM fillup did not match. This step ensures that all content is accurately translated and consistent with the original project.

By following these steps, you can effectively transition your localization project in Transifex from one type to another without losing valuable translated content, maintaining consistency, and saving time and effort.

Give it a try and let us know how it goes!
