For our first installment, we’re diving into something crucial yet often overlooked: backup strategies for your localization projects.
Imagine this: you’re close to completing a massive localization effort when, suddenly, a mishap wipes all your hard work. What’s next? Having seen this scenario unfold more than once, I can’t stress enough the importance of a solid backup plan to safeguard your translation progress.
Why is a backup strategy so crucial? Your translations aren’t just text; they’re invaluable assets that embody your effort and expertise. Here’s how you can protect them:
- Backup your Translation Memory file.
- What to do: Download a copy of your translation memory file (.tmx); this way, if your translations are lost, you’ll have the opportunity to upload this file again and enable the translation memory fill-up (available in Growth subscription and up) to restore your translations.
- Why it matters: The translation memory file holds translations that might not be currently present in your project but you may be interested in recovering later, for example, translations from removed target languages or previously removed content. This is your fallback to refill translations automatically, especially vital if you’re using features like translation memory fill-up (available with the Growth subscription and up).
- Backup your translation files.
- What to do: Download your translation files using any of the methods we have available, the UI, CLI or API, this way in case your uploaded resources get corrupted, you can easily restore them from the downloaded version. Also, you can download your translation files using any of our available modes (reviewed, proofread, translated) to restore the translations into their original statuses.
- Why it matters: If your uploaded resources get corrupted, these backups will be your salvation, allowing you to restore translations to their intended state swiftly.
- Backup your glossary.
- What to do: Periodically, you add or remove certain terms to keep your glossary up to date and aligned with your localization needs, avoid to lose all this constant progress by downloading your glossary file every certain time; then in case it is necessary, you can always upload it again.
- Why it matters: Your glossary evolves with your project. Protecting it means preserving the consistency and accuracy of your terminology.
